MEASURING UP THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE (P22&23)
GLASS
The good: Super-hard – giving a lot of pressure –
and super-slick – offering hardly any resistance –
when it is lubed up. Although it might be quite cold initially,
it warms to your body for a spectacular sensation. It comes in
some awesome shapes and colours, is not porous, which also makes
it so easy to clean.
The bad: Slippery when wet has its downfalls – you need
to be extra careful as the smoothness and slickness that makes
it ideal as sex toy also makes it risky as it can be dropped.
Keep it well away from hard surfaces – so not passionate
scenes on the bathroom floor. Some also find the idea of using
glass a bit scary in general.
The ugly: No points for guessing that glass broken glass is very,
very sharp. Even a small nick in a glass dildo will turn any sex
fun fantasy into a Hitcock thriller.
Tip: Don’t use a glass toy that isn’t specifically
intended to be used as a sex toy. Soda bottles, test tubes, light
bulbs, etc. aren’t smooth or strong enough for sex.
METAL
The good: Mostly captures the fascination of S&M enthusiasts.
Can be cool, sleek and quite beautiful.
The bad: Definitively not for the feint-hearted or first-timers.
Definitely for those who knows what they are doing or what they
are looking for.
The ugly: It can be a bit too tinny to be sexy. However, if you
are set on trying it out, go slowly. A sudden tap of a metal dildo
against the pubic bone or cervix will hurt a lot.
Tip: Try plastic dildos as a substitute – it has the same
feel as metal but without the risk.
SILICONE:
The good: if you’re into a sense of sexual realism, this
is the option for you. It is handcrafted, penis veins and all,
hypoallergenic, completely non-porous and easy to clean. True
to the real deal, silicone dildos are extremely soft and supple
to give you an extremely sensual experience. It also warms very
nicely and quickly to your body temperature.
The bad: Can be pricey because it’s handcrafted and cannot
be used with silicone lubricant.
The ugly: Be careful not to be too rough on your dildo during
play as it can tear easily if just a small crack has formed.
Tips: Though related, there is an important difference between
silicone breast implants and silicone sex toys. The material in
breast implants is a liquid silicone with loose molecules, which
can penetrate into the bloods stream if they leak. In silicone
toys, the material is processed so that the molecules form a solid,
though flexible, structure which cannot leak.
REALISTIC & LIFELIKE (Cyberskin, Futurotic,
Technoskin, UR3, etc.)
The good: As close as you can get to the feel and touch of skin,
softer than silicone or rubber, more sensual than jelly, very
flexible and often handcrafted.
The bad: Let’s face it, sometimes you want to leave something
for the imagination and these sex toys can be a bit too realistic.
The ugly: If you’re not a fan of doing the dishes, you
might find that cleaning the toy in between erotic session a bit
tedious. They also need to be kept absolutely dry and airtight.
Tip: If you notice dark spots on your toy – don’t
worry, it has not contracted any disease – throw it out
as mould grows easily on realistics.
